Description:

A teaching assistant is appointed by the board of education to provide, under the general supervision of a certified teacher, direct instructional services to an individual student or groups of students.  Interpretation of this document falls collectively on the shoulders of the Building Principals, Union President and/or Director Student Support Service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching Assistants assist teachers by performing duties assigned by the teacher, building principal and/or Director of Student Support Services and shall include duties such as:

  • Ability to assist the teacher by providing input in reference to the Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Ability to work closely with the teacher as a member of a team
  • Ability to work with individual students and/or groups of students under the direct and/or direct supervision of the teacher.
  • Ability to maintain current records on student describing strategies for student’s unique program
  • Ability to reinforce new and existing skills and concepts daily
  • Utilize their own special skills and abilities to assist in instructional programs
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the student to allow ample time for assignment completion
  • Ability to prepare classroom materials when not already available
  • Ability to facilitate communication among teachers and others as directed by the teacher
  • Ability to plan and confer with classroom teacher(s)
  • Communicate with parents of students at the school only as directed by the supervising teacher, building principal and/or Director of Student support Services
  • Ability to assist in the supervision of student(s) during arrival, dismissal, recess and lunch
  • Ability to assist in preparation of instructional materials
  • Ability to present segments of lesson plans as directed by teacher
  • Ability to assist with clerical tasks
  • Ability to collect instructional data
  • Ability to organize classroom papers
  • Ability to assist in the physical care of students; including toileting, feeding, physical assistance and self-help skills
  • Assist in the training of other Teaching Assistants (not mentoring)
  • Ability to assist with routine housekeeping not assigned to custodial staff
  • Ability to perform other duties as assigned by supervising teacher, building principal and/or Director of Student Support Services.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described represent those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.  Overall physical demands are reflective of specific assignments.

  • While performing the essential duties of this job, the individual is regularly required to use hands, fingers, hear and speak.
  • Ability to stand, walk and negotiate steps/stairs several times daily.
  • Ability to spontaneously interact with students in the classroom environment by kneeling, stooping, crouching, and moving from a standing to a sitting position as students move through the classroom.
  • Ability to maintain student safety as they move from one area to another area.
  • Ability to participate in, implement and assist in physical intervention techniques as deemed appropriate by the supervising teacher, building principal and/or Director of Student Support Services.
  • Be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • There are specific needs based on program requirements K – 12, and individuals involved in these activities in these programs must be able to meet those program needs.

incumbent of this class may also act as lunchroom cashier. Direct supervision is
received from a Cook. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only)
Assists in or prepares simple foods such as desserts and salads at the request of
Cook; Assembles and breaks down hot and cold food packing lines; May assist in portioning and packing prepared food as scheduled; Sets tables for meals and cleans them after meals; Heats and serves food to students and employees; Cleans refrigerators, coolers, dishwashers and other kitchen equipment; Cleans work area; Washes dishes, pots and pans by hand or uses the dishwasher; May receive stock items and put them in proper place when necessary; May act as lunchroom cashier.

SCHOOL BUS MONITOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine work of ordinary difficulty involving 
responsibility for overseeing the loading and unloading of student passengers, assisting the driver 
in maintaining order and for ad­ ministering to their needs, comfort and conduct while in transit 
on regularly scheduled bus trips to and from school. Supervision is exercised over the conduct of 
student passengers as required. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Rides on a school bus for the purpose of assisting pupils to climb aboard and alight from bus;
Seats and places student passengers as required;
May operate a lift to load and unload handicapped student passengers and secures restraint devices 
and wheel chair locks;
Maintains order on bus and makes certain that student passengers are seated while bus is in motion;
Prepares written reports;
Meets with parents, head bus driver and school officials when necessary; Assists students and 
drivers as needed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good general intelligence; familiarity with the various bus routes in the district and their 
stopping places for students; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions;
