Job Description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the overhaul and repair of standard automotive equipment. The work, which requires a thorough knowledge of the trade, is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out work assignments. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITITES:  (Illustrative Only)

Assists in the minor repair and maintenance the district’s vehicle fleet; May include but not limited to:                 

Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, shock absorbers; ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and front and rear axles;
Adjusts connecting rods and bearings; Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels; 
Makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment;  Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filters;
Tunes engine and sets the timing;

Keeps routine records of work done;
Performs a variety of related tasks;
May perform minor body and fender work.
Operated a school bus or mini-van on a regular schedule or on special occasions;
May be required to operate a station wagon or other similar vehicle;
Maintains orderly conduct of children on bus;
Keeps interior and exterior of vehicle clean and neat;
Maintains records of mileage, routes, times and incidents   

Performs other duties as assigned.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology

and tools of the trade; Skill in welding techniques; Ability to make difficult repairs to automotive equipment and other mechanical equipment; Ability to work from plans and specifications and  follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; Good motor and hand and eye coordination; Manual dexterity;

Job Qualifications

Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.

Possession of the appropriate Federal and State Motor Vehicle Operator license at the time of appointment and one year of experience as an automotive mechanic helper in a garage or automotive repair shop.

Note:  Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education and be at least 21 years of age.  If the position involves acting as a trainer for new School Bus Driver, candidate must possess proper certification in accordance with Section 6.16 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and Article 19A of the Vehicle and Traffic Law.
